Medicare advantage plans offer coverage through a private insurance company. Usually you will have a primary care physician assigned to you. To visit a specialist you will need to confirm that the specialist is on the network and will normally need to get a referral. When you visit the doctor you will usually have to pay a copay for services rendered. Medicare advantage plans are county specific.

Medicare Supplement plans keep medicare as your primary insurance. This being the case you may go to any doctor that accepts assignment for medicare. Prescription drug coverage is not included with a medicare supplement plan and would have to be purchased separately. Plan require a monthly premium. Plans are identified with letters. Changes to these types of plans can be made at any time but may require underwriting.
